Green Flag Raising Ceremony and Silloth-on-Solway Carnival

Press Release

Silloth-on-Solway Carnival is being held on Monday 26th August. The Green Flag, awarded by Keep Britain Tidy, will be raised on the Green at 11.15am. Local photographers and reporters are invited to attend the flag raising ceremony and the Carnival event which follows.

The Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the Green boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Tony Markley, Mayor of Silloth, said “Silloth is proud to have the Green Flag flying above the Green during 2013-2014. The Award indicates national recognition for the hard work and dedication of the Town Council, the Green’s staff and the local volunteers in Silloth. who together make sure the Green is well looked after and events are well organised for everyone to enjoy.”

The Carnival programme organised by the Carnival Committee, chaired by John Hope, continues after the flag raising ceremony with a puppet show for youngsters at 11.30am in Christ Church, followed at 12 mid-day by the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling on the Green. At 12.30, floats and participants assemble at Skinburness Road and the parade is due to start at 1.00pm. The first of two medieval stunt displays will be at 1.30pm on the Green. Lots more fun and entertainment throughout the day…not to be missed!.

Note to editors

Silloth–on-Solway is lucky enough to have three interconnected village greens, namely: ‘The Green,’ ‘Harbour Green’ and ‘Skinburness Green,’ Successful funding bids in 2010 resulted in a two-year programme to refurbish ‘the Green’ and restore its heritage buildings. Heritage Lottery Fund put forward £1.1m and the Rural Development Programme for England provided funds of £100k. The Green now boasts a modern waterplay area, an entertainment area in local Cumbrian sandstone, a woodland adventure play area, and a newly revamped putting green. Beautiful oak picnic tables and benches are to be found in various locations, all accessible by new paths allowing disabled access to all main areas. The rose garden, planted in 1954 to commemorate the Queen’s coronation, has been replanted with roses. In addition, the Edwardian ladies toilets, built in 1910 and the spectacular Victorian pagoda built on a mound overlooking the sea have been sympathetically refurbished. An increasing number of events take place on the Green throughout the year. Visit www.sillothgreen.co.uk for more information.
