Press Release: Silloth Green Day, 26th May 2013

Silloth Green Day, 26th May 2013.

The first major event of the year in Silloth – Silloth Green Day – is due to be held on the Green on 26th May, between 11.00am and 5.00pm. The event is being organised by Friends of the Green (FOG) with strong support from Silloth Tourist Action Group (STAG). Owen Martin, Chair of the Friends group says “The event will give local people, groups, organisations and volunteers an opportunity to showcase what Silloth is and what the town as a whole has to offer; and it will also provide a great fun day out for local families and visitors. Refreshments will be on sale and some of the local shops will be selling their wares.”

The Splash pad will be turned on and the adventure play area will also be open for the kids to enjoy. Entertainment will include a Punch and Judy show; a Magician; Kids DJ; Balloon Man; Face-painter and Glitter tattoos, Donkey Rides and a Funfair. Owen says “Children will have an opportunity to feed the donkeys, and Donkey Welfare Officer, Pam Moon, will be on hand to provide information about their welfare. Donkeys are a real part of the Green’s heritage and Stephen Wright, who co-authored ‘A Century Around Silloth’ with Peter Ostle, is putting a display together with old photos and information about people and donkeys on the Green in times gone past.”

Volunteer groups in Silloth are pulling together. Music is being organised by the Music and Beer Festival Committee. Children from the school will be performing, and Mokey Fit will put on a session on the trailer stage. Food demos from celebrity chef John Crouch, and bread making from Carrs will be in the big marquee. Information from various groups, including Knoxwood Wildlife Rescue Trust, Area Of Natural Beauty and others will be on hand; also historical information and photos, courtesy of the Holme St Cuthbert History Group. The Carnival and Kite Festival Committees will showcase what they are doing this coming year and the Vintage Rally will be bringing a few vintage vehicles along on the day, to give people an advance glimpse at what will be happening later in the year. The Solway Wood Carvers will be showcasing what they do. Information about Soldiers in Silloth will be available, and the exhibition across the road from the Green will be open.

Silloth is in Hadrian’s Wall Country, and the Roman Deja Crew will be on the Green, including a story teller and a Roman Soldier, also a spinner, potter and metal jewelry maker from Roman times. They’ll not only demonstrate the skills people had in Roman times, they’ll be encouraging people on the Green to have a go too. Silloth’s own RNLI will be on the Green as well as the First Responders and Christmas Lights folks, who all do such a great job in the Town and help make Silloth a place to be really proud of.

“What happens today soon becomes tomorrow’s memory” says Anna Malina, the Community Engagement Officer for the Green, who is organising a small group of ‘citizen reporters’ to bring back photographs and short video clips from the event for uploading to the ‘Community Memories’ section of the Silloth Green website. Owen Martin adds “A competition is running on the Silloth Green Facebook page to win a prize worth over £30 to spend at Silloth Green Day, including a £10 Fun fair Voucher, £10 Food Voucher, and Free Donkey Rides for four. All you have to do is ‘like’ and ‘share’ the page. Winner to be announced on 25th May.”
